The fertile black soil of North Karnataka yields a rich bounty of vegetables and grain, and this delicious, fresh produce is best experienced in a traditional Jolada Rotti (jowar rotti) vegetarian meal at a khanavali (eating house) in the region. And the most popular jolada rotti oota seems to be the one served at Basaveshwar Khanavali, a string of vegetarian eateries in Dharwad, Hubballi and now, Bengaluru, that date back to 1963. We visited their main branch at Chennamma Circle in Hubballi, where we met the Ganachari family that is committed to serving sumptuous North Karnataka meals, and also discovered an interesting technique that makes their jolada rotti special.
